Whiplash & WAD

CAD Cervical/Acceleration/Deceleration Injury & Whole Body Acceleration/Deceleration Injury

Whiplash (CAD Cervical/Acceleration/Deceleration Injury) or also WAD (Whole Body Acceleration/Deceleration Injury) Whiplash is a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip.

Whiplash is commonly caused by rear-end car crashes. But whiplash also can result from sports accidents, physical abuse and other types of traumas, such as a fall. Whiplash may be called a neck sprain or strain, but these terms also include other types of neck injuries.

Dr. Lok treats whiplash and the lesser known Whole Body whiplash (WAD trauma). It's common sense that not only does the neck get “whipped” around, but the body can be shoved over as well.

Early mobilization is the best method to avoid joint  contracture and its harmful  consequences on articular musculoskeletal soft tissue chronicity.

Whiplash can be serious with long term effects of headaches, neck, and back pain. The sooner you get in after an accident, the better the long term healing prognosis is. Not only can the neck and spine be affected, but injury to the delicate jaw can cause TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction) as well.

The muscles in the neck are commonly the biggest area to be affected, however, soft tissue of the discs, ligaments, and zygapophyseal joints are also affected by whiplash.

Interestingly enough, over the years, hand, shoulder, and foot injuries do not get addressed as often as the spine does. It makes sense that right before an accident the foot can press hard on the brake and the wrists and shoulders brace for impact, trying to take the brunt of the force, so we make sure to look at your extremities as well.
